Is this compatible with my alternator?
The Victron Orion 30A DC-DC isolated charger system is compatible with both traditional and smart alternators. As a rule of thumb, most vans from 2015 onwards are fitted with smart alternators. Although you can double check by following the instructions on our blog post – Do I have a smart alternator?
Do I need an isolated or non-isolated charger?
Everyone’s van is different but we recommend isolated DC-DC chargers in 100% of our builds. The main reason for this is that these are compatible with all types of chassis types and provide an extra layer of safety. This is due to the separate negative provided by the leisure side of the circuit ensuring you are not relying on the vehicle’s common ground point for your auxiliary loads. You can read more about the different types of split charging in our blog post.
How long can I stay off-grid?
The 30A DC-DC charger will charge your leisure battery at a rate of 18A per hour when driving. You can use the calculator tab above to see exactly how long you can stay off-grid based on the appliances you are using, battery bank capacity and how many hours you are planning on driving per day.
Built-in Bluetooth
The 30A Victron Orion DC-DC charger has built-in Bluetooth which allows you to connect to the VictronConnect App wirelessly. You can monitor the voltage of both your starter and leisure battery, customise your charging setting and view historic trends all via Bluetooth.
